The UltraMetabolism CookbookBy Mark Hyman, MD (Scribner, 2007)
We’re fans of Dr. Mark Hyman’s UltraMetabolism approach for two reasons: 1) It’s based on strong principles of well-balanced eating; 2) it doesn’t require deprivation. Hyman’s central idea is simple: Whole foods heal, while processed foods make us sick by triggering inflammatory reactions that produce a range of ugly effects, from accelerated aging and digestive troubles to depressed metabolism and increased food cravings. The UltraMetabolism Cookbook teaches you to use whole, fresh foods to help your body reboot your metabolism in a way that feels (and tastes) good. Hyman organizes his recipes according to the program’s two-phase, eight-week plan. Those in the first section support the initial three-week “detox” stage and contain no gluten, dairy, eggs, alcohol or sugar. (“Detox” here means three substantial meals a day, like chicken cacciatore and roasted shrimp salad.) The second phase slowly reintroduces foods so you can detect which do and don’t agree with you. This “metabolic rebalancing” includes yummy treats like honey-roasted spiced pecans. For all the “miracle diet” claims out there, the principles of UltraMetabolism are more effective than anything we’ve seen, and the high pleasure quotient doesn’t hurt a bit.
